Class X CBSE exams is now optional
It’s a historic consensus but the Central Advisory Board of Education (CABE) has today announced that come March 2010 and you will know that marks will soon be replaced by grades and that will be awarded through a comprehensive evaluation over the whole academic year. Class X board exams will be made optional for students who will continue in the same school for classes XI and XII.
The objective of this overhaul in the education system is to reduce stress on students. An initiative taken by Union Human Resource Development minister, Kapil Sibal is to revolutionize the education system prevailing in schools in India. The states have agreed to extend their full support and co-operation in this transformation and transition. But, this grading system is now only for CBSE schools and not state board schools.
It has also been said that schools that have class XI and XII need not conduct class X exams, but schools with classes upto 10th standard may conduct the test. Under this new system, students will be awarded grades such as A+, A, B, C, D and E. Grading will be mandatory but students can also opt for Board Exams. In two months time a core curriculum in mathematics and science will be formulated.
To implement other provisions of Education Bill, the cost to the exchequer will be Rs 1, 50,000 crore. Center has the provision for Rs.90, 000 cr and rest need to be provided by the states.
Highlights of the Education Bill include:
- Single, autonomous authority over higher education system.
- All education boards to have a core curriculum in Science and Mathematics.
- Selection of Vice Chancellors for Central Universities should be freed from political nexus.
A new era is to be ushered in the education system. We wish all the best for the changes ahead.
Points to differ is always welcome!
This is a decision which will be unanimously welcomed by all high school students. It cannot get easier than this, for them..
On a serious note.. This is a bold decision and a way to make education more practical than theoretical and bookish. This is one step which might help student to think, imagine, innovate without the burden of performing in exam. This can be taken as one small step that will help in developing a thought process in young minds that will be original and not what books or teachers want them to think, which I feel is the true essence of education. It will become easier for students to realize their true potentials and inclination.
But I feel only taking this step will be a waste if we dont have teachers who understand what real education is, teachers who dont consider marks as a parameter to judge a child’s mental accumen. We must have higher education system supporting this, a higher education with varied courses and research programs.
I also feel this kind of education is more useful in a developed country where there is no tension of how students will earn their bread and butter once they are done with studying. The motivation for education should not be getting job but knowledge, which is very difficult in our country. Our choice of course we study depends on the job oportunity ahead and not what we are interested in. I feel this might not be a wise decision considering the competition students are eventually going to face for the limited resources and jobs. They wont be prepared for this burden of sudden and tough competition.
