Love Aaj Kal- Can it bridge the gap between two generations?
![]()
From Romeo Juliet, Heer Ranjha and Laila Majnu, now in the celluloid of 21st century we have relationship of love being sensitively treated by director of Jab We Met Imitiaz Ali in Saif Ali Khan’s home production Love Aaj Kal.
The central theme of the film is the approaches taken in two different ages-old time pyaar of 1965 and this new generation love of 2009. Saif Ali Khan who is the lead male character plays a double role while Deepika Padukone is the female lead in his love story of 2009.
As the audience is taken to the times of 60s, they meet Veer and Harleen amidst the niche of thunder and lightening. It’s the typical cinematic feeling of love at the first sight and a promise to self that it can only be she who can be Veer’s wife. Love expressed is not in words but in silent action that might be travelling thousand kilometers by train only to catch a glimpse of his lady love.
That is how love was defined in that generation.
Come 2009 and you will see the vibrant, expressive, enthusiastic love birds-Jai and Meera. It’s the live-in relationship that these two enjoy without being tied down to responsibilities of institution such as marriage. For them immortal love stories are good to read as bed-time folklore. But in reality, relationship flows with the tide of time and one needs to move on without carrying the burden of it is what Jai believes in. For the young couple of Love 2009, its by choice that you lead your life.
The expression of love is distinctly different in the two eras but I believe that the feeling remains the same. So how Imitiaz Ali finally threads these two opposite strands to weave a unique flavor of love is what remains to be seen.
The music of Love Aaj Kal is scored by Pritam and lyricist is Irshaad Kamli. The songs are expected to be a big hit. But what remains to be seen is whether Saif Ali Khan and Deepika duo can give the Big push to their respective careers with this film.
The movie is speculated to be a remake of a Taiwanese film Three Times. So, why not check out how Veer and Jai understands Love as the film hits theaters on July 31st.
